Amazing Day on PHS Builder/Architect Hard-Hat Tours
Wow, wow…WOW!!! What an amazing day we had on the PHS Builder/Architect North Shore Hard-Hat Tours! With nearly 50 attendees seeing a stellar line-up of projects, capped off with a fabulous gathering for networking and fun, we couldn’t have had a better PowerHouse SMART day.
All-Electric, Contemporary Home
We began our Builder/Architect Hard-Hat Tour at the Evanston new construction project by Nathan Kipnis (Kipnis Architecture & Planning). An all-electric, contemporary home with the mechanicals still exposed; we had an insider’s view of what it takes to create what will be the first Evanston LEED Platinum home. Nate and Drina Nikola of Dwelling Spaces & Places are creating a sustainable, ultra-energy efficient, locally sourced, modern home, using the very latest technologies and recycled/reclaimed finishes. Special inclusions are the indoor compact lap pool, 5 separate mini-split heating/cooling systems operated by smart home technology, operable clerestory windows, and many more unique details tailored for the comfort and sensibilities of one very pleased client.
Stunning Views of Northmoor Country Club
The second tour stop was the recently completed modern new construction home in Highland Park by architect Stuart Shayman (Stuart D. Shayman Associates). The light-filled single-story home is the second project Stuart has completed for his clients. The rear of the home features a spectacular wall of windows overlooking a large raised terrace designed to capture stunning views of the Northmoor Country Club, an enviable indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Collaborator Jarmila Singer of Sound Living provided automated Lutron window coverings for added privacy and partial light with a single touch. Stuart’s work included a spectacular variety of low maintenance finish material selections, highlighting a mix of textures in a cohesive neutral palette. The project includes detailed custom built-ins and furniture by Tinu and Karolina Theccanat (Intelligent Spaces By Design), an indoor sunken jetted spa and an expansive lower level fully appointed with guest quarters and entertaining.
Olympic Size Pool and Water-Park Like Elements
We continued to be blown away by the talents of our PHS Members at our third stop, an under-construction custom estate in Mettawa. Located in a newly developed private enclave, the project is designed to take advantage of the tree-lined 2.5 acre parcel. Steve Melnick’s, Heartstone Custom Builders brought in the talents of architect Ron McCormack (McCormack & Etten), and Wade Harvey (Ryco Landscaping), to collaborate on this multi-million dollar compound. Steve and his team led us through an impressive array of video animations and renderings, created to help the client visualize the incredible level of detail and complication both inside and out. The impressive home design highlights stunning front and rear elevations, foyer barrel ceiling, raised terrace and three season’s screen porch focusing views of the expansive property. The project’s landscape architecture includes an Olympic size pool with unique water-park like elements, a spa, a fire pit and a variety of accompanying hardscapes, delivering the ultimate in outdoor “resort style” living. Steve demonstrated his firm’s use of Builder Trend technology, allowing his team to deliver a highly professional design build process. He is focused on keeping his clients informed and on track, keys to a seamless, time efficient build-out.
Twilight Cocktail Networking Party
By now, we were all good friends as we continued to Deerfield to experience the outdoor residential design build landscape renovation project by Nancy Lyons Hannick (NLH Landscape Architects) and her collaborators, Dean MacMorris (Night Light, Inc.), and Craig Harthan (Craiger Custom Design). This stop included a project tour/presentation combined with a Twilight Cocktail Networking Party. Nancy gave an overview of the project, including the clients’ needs, space constraints, materials and the process behind choices and design elements.
Together we thoroughly enjoyed the evening, mixing and mingling in the romantically lit outdoors. We experienced first-hand with delicious food and drink how Nancy’s clients will enjoy the privacy of their new front courtyard, the outdoor kitchen/bar, rustic, reclaimed-wood pergola, the warmth of the stone fire pit with built-in seating, and perfectly landscape lighting creating the ultimate outdoor environment. Thank You all for an outstanding day of education, knowledge sharing, open-discussion, and relationship building all while having fun in the sun and rain.
